چکیده مقاله
Salinity is one of the most important abiotic stresses that limit plant growth and crop production of Iran. About 15.2% (24 million hectares) of land and about 50% of irrigated farm land is now facing with salinity stress. Gossypium species (± 49) represent a vast resource of genetic diversity for the improvement of cultivated cotton. To determine intra- and inter-specific genetic diversity and relationships within a diverse collection of Gossypium genus, we employed morphological traits and molecular markers. After evaluation of diversity we found good materials for salinity studies. We studied diversity for prolin and soluble carbohydrates accumulation and Na+ and K+ uptakes in these materials under salinity and non-stress conditions. We observed high inter and intraspecific diversity for salt tolerance. Among the evaluated characteristics, we found K+/Na+ is the best and valid index to select salinity tolerant germplasm, that has high genetic diversity and heritability in both ploidy levels, but prolin and soluble carbohydrates accumulation had low genetic diversity and heritability in all species. We investigated two levels of leaching (100% & 150%) and four cultivation methods. In addition to the reduction of water availability and toxic ion effects in saline condition, high concentration of Na+ and Cl- ions will normally inhibit the plant nutrition.
