Artemisia annua is an exceptional natural reservoir of artemisinin, a key compound in the treatment of malaria. In recent decades, remarkable therapeutic properties and beneficial effects on diseases such as cancer, COVID-19 and various viral diseases have been documented. The growing medical need underlines its importance as a valuable medicine. However, the inherent lack of artemisinin has led to research into alternative production methods, particularly the use of bioengineered plants and microorganisms. Numerous research efforts have been made to increase artemisinin production, with transgenic plants proving a particularly promising route. Genetically modified transgenic plants provide a sustainable and efficient platform for artemisinin production. The introduction of genes involved in artemisinin biosynthesis allows researchers to manipulate plants and microorganisms to increase yields of this invaluable compound. By manipulating key enzymes and regulatory elements, artemisinin synthesis in plant tissues is further optimized. In particular, microorganisms such as yeast and E. coli have been genetically modified to produce both artemisinin precursors and the compound itself. Despite commendable progress, challenges remain in improving artemisinin production in transgenic plants and microorganisms. Genetic stability, regulatory complexity and scaling issues represent formidable obstacles that require concerted efforts to overcome. Given the relevance of artemisinin in medicine, in our study we cloned key genes from its metabolic pathways. Using various genetic transformation approaches, we continue insertion experiments to obtain new plant genotypes carrying artemisinin biosynthesis genes. They are then examined for artemisinin production using molecular biology and metabolomic techniques. |
